This reference list has been compiled to inform researchers, students, and healthcare and other professionals about the current state of the literature on performance and image-enhancing drug use.
Social, epidemiological and cultural studies peer-reviewed articles published since 2000 were collected between April and June 2018. These articles were gathered via Google Scholar using the following search terms: performance and image-enhancing drugs AND social research; performance and image-enhancing drugs AND epidemiology; performance and image-enhancing drugs AND sociology; performance and image-enhancing drugs AND ethnography; performance and image-enhancing drugs AND qualitative research; performance and image-enhancing drugs AND cultural studies, and performance and image-enhancing drugs AND interviews. The same search terms were used, but replacing ‘performance and image-enhancing’ with ‘steroids’; ‘image and performance-enhancing’ and ‘doping’. Articles were also collected by searching the reference lists of articles, and by following suggested and similar items proposed by Google Scholar and related searches.
Books and book chapters published since 2000 were collected using both Google Books and the Curtin University Library catalogue using the search terms: performance and image-enhancing drugs AND social research; performance and image-enhancing drugs AND epidemiology; performance and image-enhancing drugs AND sociology; performance and image-enhancing drugs AND ethnography; performance and image-enhancing drugs AND qualitative research; performance and image-enhancing drugs AND cultural studies, and performance and image-enhancing drugs AND interviews. The same search terms were used, but replacing ‘performance and image-enhancing’ with ‘steroids’; ‘image and performance-enhancing’ and ‘doping’.
NOTE: The resulting references have been organised into key topic areas: Books, book chapters, body image, epidemiology, harms, policy/health/harm reduction, blood-borne viruses, injecting, masculinity/gender, motivations for use, multiple drug use, sport and stigma. However, some works cover material of relevance to several topic areas. For example, the section on stigma comprises works primarily addressing this topic, but references to stigma can be found in many other works.
